However, I sold it and got a DS1815+ and it's waayyy better. I used to have a Mac Mini server, used for backups, photos, and media management (Plex and others). If you do wait, and Apple drops the ball on supporting headless desktop hardware, then I'd go NAS. If you need to get rolling on this you might look for a used 2009 or 2011 Mini and see how that works, then upgrade to whatever Apple decides to allow us to buy if it looks like an improvement over what you have. I would definitely not recommend the current Mini. Today I'd suggest waiting to see what Apple is going to do with their desktop lines before jumping into this. I bumped up the memory in my original Mini and replaced the spinner with an internal SD a few years ago and put big NAS-grade spinners in external drives on USB-3 connections. I've used Linux boxes for many years, longer than I've used macOS, but I didn't want to face the prospect of something not working and having to deal with the computer version of finger pointing between the two OS flavors. Most NAS boxes run some flavor of Linux, and while macOS and Linux share a lot of architectural history there's a lot in macOS networking that "Just Doesn't Work" (tm) with classic *nix networking, at least not as well as it should. What was attractive about the Mini was mainly avoiding the myriad little issues involving a non-Apple system on a mostly-Apple network. To install and configure your very own Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS, you'll need the following equipment.I went the same route as dimme (Mini rather than NAS) and was lucky enough to get my Mini prior to the 2014 downgrade. If you'd like to learn more about Plex, check out our guide on how to get started with Plex. Now you can enjoy access to all your content on your smart TV, Xbox One, tablet, smartphone, Windows 10 PC, laptop, and all other devices running the Plex app with adequate access. But you can create new folders in your "home" folder that can then be accessed through Windows Explorer and other file managers for a more effortless transfer. The NAS itself comes with some default folders for such media, which can be selected. When running Plex on your Synology NAS, you will want to select a folder where Plex can keep track of media files, be it photos, music, or video. The truth is, Plex could be just what you're looking for to help you manage your media collection. Many of us might have passed it over for some reason, be it a lack of understanding of what it does, thinking it couldn't possibly be useful to you, or something else entirely. Plex is one of those services that has been around for some time. Source: Windows Central (Image credit: Source: Windows Central)
